Both are cinematic, both feature your product, and both can live on your homepage. So what's the difference between a brand film and a commercial — and which one does your business actually need? The distinction is less about how they look and more about the job each is hired to do.
The commercial: built to sell
A commercial has a specific, measurable job — usually to drive a product, offer, or campaign. It's typically shorter (15–60 seconds), sharp, and built around a single message and a clear call to action. Commercials are made to be distributed at scale: paid media, pre-roll, social ads, broadcast. Success looks like attention, clicks, and sales.
The brand film: built to define
A brand film sells the company, not a single product. It's the piece that establishes who you are, what you believe, and how you want to be felt — often a little longer, more story-driven, and less overtly promotional. Brand films live on your homepage, in your investor and sales decks, at events, and at the top of a funnel. Success looks like recognition, trust, and a consistent identity everything else can hang off.
Side by side
- Goal: commercial → drive a product or action; brand film → define the company and build trust.
- Length: commercial → usually 15–60s; brand film → often 60–180s+.
- Tone: commercial → punchy, focused on one message; brand film → cinematic, story-led.
- Distribution: commercial → paid media and ads at scale; brand film → homepage, decks, events, organic.
- Shelf life: commercials rotate with campaigns; a strong brand film can anchor your presence for a year or more.
Which do you need?
If you're launching a product or running paid media, you need a commercial (often several cuts of one). If you're repositioning, raising, or your homepage video no longer represents who you've become, you need a brand film. Many companies benefit from both — and the most efficient path is to shoot them together: a brand film becomes the anchor, and a set of commercials and social cuts is built from the same production.
